ADAPTATION OF AN ELECTRIC MILL IN SZYDLOWIEC FORM 1912 TO A SCHOOL OF STONE CRAFTSMANSHIP

Every place has its unique value, it can recall memories, we can come there to spend our spare time. It seems to me, that small towns, where landscape is changing very slowly, can be a place of relaxation and contemplation. However, living in such places is reasonable only when there are prospects of development, schools, widely understood culture, leisure activities, located in the town or the nearby area.
One of the charming, small towns is Szydłowiec, a small town located on the border between Mazowieckie and Świętokrzyskie regions. As a person devoted to the place I am observing a trend of gradual depopulation of the town. However, Szydłowiec has high potential and I would like to take advantage of that in my project. Szydłowiec was famous for the extraction of sandstone. Currently there are three already closed quarries. Production moved out of the city, for example to Śmiłów. In the area there are several small masons. Their employees are leaving for foreign training of stone processing (Austria, France), because the area does not ensure educational opportunities.
The school of stone craftsmanship in the mill (that does not work as a mill for more than 20 years) could stimulate the part of the city, which seems to be forgotten. The stone school in the mill would provide a place to obtain information about: - Maintenance, - Processing, - Performing detail and sculptures of stone, that stone masons could use later in their work. Convenient location among the stone deposits and proximity to the Centre of Polish Sculpture gives good opportunities for development and cooperation for the school.

The mill is located in Szydłowiec , Źródlana Street, near the old town. Usable mill building's area amounts to 1 318 m2. Building plot is 0.36 ha. On the plot there are supplementary designed workshops connected with galleries and kitchen building, which connects the old mill building with a residential building. For the land has been prepared a local development plan. The mill is located in the zone of the historical center S1 in Szydłowiec. It is entered into the public register of monuments. However, it is not under the supervision of conservationist.
