Open Design & Co-Create: Picket

Picket is a concept company that has roots in open design. It was a part of the Open Design & Co-Create Graphic Design Show at the University of Wisconsin-Stout on May 9th, 2014.

Project scope includes brand conception, development, and multi-discipline implementation , culminating in a display for the exhibition.

Mission Statement:

Picket aims to empower communities of all sizes with a common project, and get people actively involved in environmental stewardship. It is reframing the fence as a living space rather than a border. This empowerment is achieved through engendering a connection with the community and the local environment, as people construct their own green spaces to come together, learn, and create a better world.

The aspects that really drive this project are the ideas of adaptability and exploration of a system, as well as the intrinsic value of the hand-made object. Many of the materials in this project either was re-used, or has the capability of being dismantled and reused or recycled with ease.

For further involvement, recycled paper "seed-bombs" with handmade packaging made for a popular takeaway.
The seed-bombs are comprised of reused scraps from the Art Department's print lab, seeds, and a bit of color.
The packaging utilizes plantable seed paper, and silkscreened graphics.

Silkscreened posterboards utilizing both canvas and acrylic surfaces. 15"x22" each.

The final booth set up. The booth holds a large container, filled with dirt, that invites a moment of discovery in the otherwise simple display.

At the Picket booth, guests were invited to play in the dirt. The action of reaching for a business card broke the barriers between the perceived display surface and encouraged further involvement. People were encouraged to get dirty, and even helped plant a garden by sprinkling seeds and pushing them in to the surface.
