Documenting the passing of time

Materials:
HB pencil
2B pencil
6B pencil
Sketch paper
Process:
I used HB pencil to draw the rough outline of the hourglass and determine the overall shape of the hourglass. Then I used 2B pencil to draw "pure" lines and add shadows to the hourglass. I apply all of the sand with a 2B pencil and then use my fingers to smooth it over to make it look softer. In order to distinguish the distance of the sand to achieve a better visual effect, I used a 6B pencil to deepen the sand against the glass to create a feeling of fullness.

Reflection:
I spent a lot of time adjusting the shape of the hourglass when I sketched it with an hb pencil. The lines HB pencil left are much wider than I had planned. Although I intended to draw with "pure" lines when I used a 2B pencil, the lines were more like "broken" lines because of my hesitation. These conditions lead to cluttered lines in the first image.

Reflection:
While drawing this picture I realized that the sand that is flowing towards the bottom half of the hourglass cannot all be blackened by a 6B pencil because it would make it impossible to distinguish the different parts. So instead, I used a 2B pencil to apply the sand that had accumulated farther away, and a 6B pencil to deepen the sand against the glass wall. In order to show the rough texture of the sand, I did not use my fingers to smear 2B pencil marks on the bottom half of the sand.

Reflection:
I felt more confidence when drawing the shape. And I am skillful when I use 6B pencil to draw "pure" lines. It took half as long to draw this image as the first one. I like the texture that the 6B pencil leaves on the sketch paper, which makes me feel it looks more like sand than the 2B pencil.

Reflection:
I could already draw the shape of the hourglass directly with the 2B pencil, but to be on the safe side I still draw it with the HB pencil first. But HB pencil lines are also "pure" lines because I feel confident drawing shapes.

Reflection:
Drawing the same outline repeatedly allowed me to become skilled when I determined the shape of an object and drew it. The change of sand makes me learn to think in painting. I loved the GIF these five images turned into, it was smoother than I expected.
