From Paddock To Plate

From Paddock To Plate is a celebration of vegetable goodness, paying homage to the importance of harvesting and gathering produce which forms the cultural foundation of bringing people together over food and drinks. Inspired by an unsung hero in dining culture around the globe who is recognised as no more than a side-dish, the humble eggplant is transformed into a magnificent ceramic showpiece to highlight its’ elegant and voluptuous form through expressive contemporary design. The unique three-piece set offers a wine carafe and two wine vessels slip cast from stoneware, designed with ergonomic and comfortable edges allowing the user to feel relaxed while they indulge.

Boasting a cut-out teardrop handle, the wine carafe allows pouring affordances with a sleek rectangular rim that squeezes into a curved neck and asymmetrical rounded belly and base. A traditional circular rim is crafted into the stemless wine vessels, while the forms mirror the curvature and the angular mouth of the carafe harmonising the modernist design style. The works are finished with a combination of dipped oil spot glaze and raw unglazed white stoneware linking to organic aesthetics which influenced the creation of the project. The graphic black and spotted glaze with a smooth surface of the vessels hint at eggplant skin, while the unglazed sections represent the natural landscape from which food and pottery is grown.

From Paddock To Plate encourages the audience to reflect on the intertwined nature of dining sets and food culture while motivating ceramicists to sit back and enjoy the fruit and
vegetables of our labour.
