As Goodna and surrounding Ipswich suburbs continue to rebuild after the January floods, Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale is encouraging all levels of the community to work together to help the homeless.

“What I’ve realised is that homelessness is more than homelessness. It affects a lot of people and there are different reasons for why people are homeless,” he said.

“It can affect any of us. I don’t think we should be judgemental, I think what we should be is supportive.”

Cr Pisasale will join St Vincent de Paul Society Queensland’s CEO, Peter Maher and other CEOs in June to experience a cold winter’s night, sleeping rough at Brisbane’s South Bank, for CEO Sleepout.

“We’re expecting around 100 community and business leaders to sleep out on Thursday June 16 as part of our challenge to them to raise money and awareness for homelessness in Queensland,” Mr Maher said.

“Ipswich has a lot of youth homelessness due to unemployment and people who are in transition can find themselves homeless,” Cr Pisasale said.

Whilst some homeless youths have started to find employment through support agencies, there’s still more that can be done to reduce homelessness.

“It’s not about titles anymore, it’s not about positions, it’s about responsibility as CEOs, along with the rest of the community, to understand [homelessness] and to see what they can do to improve it,” he said.

“We have to work together, the private, public and political sectors, to make a difference.”
