承藝|THE WEIGHT OF CRAFTS

"The Weight of Craft" is a conceptual craft-based course at HK PolyU that fosters collaboration between design students and craftsmen. The course harnesses students' professional knowledge and creativity to assist craftsmen in innovating, staying current, and expanding their businesses. Through active engagement with craftsmen, students gain valuable insights into traditional crafting methods and benefit from their expertise. Simultaneously, the course allows students to refine their traditional design skills, resulting in a mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and expertise between the two groups.

This project exemplifies the ideal implementation of the conceptual craft course. It involves the participation of Choi Wing Kei, an experienced craftsman specialising in flower plaque making. Choi collaborates with students on a flower plaque and exhibition, featuring three displays: (1) a material book that provides the audience with a touch experience to understand the history and production process of traditional flower plaques, (2) a flower plaque symbolising blessings for graduates in the post-pandemic era, and (3) tool exhibits aimed at fostering public respect for craftsmen. Serving as a catalyst, this project aims to enhance students and the public's understanding and appreciation of traditional crafts while promoting innovation within the craft industry.
