Informative Book Design: Breaking the Binary
A queer art history guide to those breaking the gender binary then and now.
WELCOME TO THE GREY AREA
The objective of this project was to design an information-based, 7-inch by 7-inch, saddle-stitch book about a topic or idea that I am passionate about. My passion stands tall for understanding individuals different than ourselves. To open your mind to the world and the history you never knew about.

Understanding the history of gender and gender expression is vital because it illuminates the multifaceted and evolving nature of human identity and societal norms. This historical knowledge helps us recognize that concepts of gender have not always been fixed, but have instead been shaped by cultural, social, and political factors. By comprehending the past, we can better appreciate the struggles and achievements of marginalized communities, while also gaining insights into the ongoing challenges faced by individuals whose gender identities fall outside traditional binaries. This understanding fosters empathy, promotes inclusivity, and ultimately contributes to a more equitable and accepting society where all individuals are free to express their gender identity authentically.
Breaking the Binary is a 24-page, fully illustrated book not only representing my knowledge and love for print design, but also part of my commitment to educating the public on the subject harshly talked about. Approaching the concept with illustrations, to make you feel connected and better understand the process of educating yourself on such a "controversial" idea.
This captivating book delves deep into the rich tapestry of gender history, shedding light on the multifaceted evolution of gender definitions throughout time. Beyond its educational value, the bold red color, meticulously chosen for the book's design, plays a significant role in symbolizing the resilience and determination of those who have sought to break free from the confines of binary gender constructs. Red, a color that is often associated with passion, strength, and rebellion, mirrors the spirit of those who have blazed trails in the ongoing struggle for gender equality and self-expression.

As readers turn each page, they embark on a journey that not only educates but also inspires. The significance of the red hue becomes evident as it represents the fiery determination of individuals who, throughout history, have defied oppressive gender norms, and continues to be a beacon for those navigating their own unique gender identities today. 'Breaking the Binary' is more than a book; it's a testament to the power of knowledge, resilience, and self-expression, as well as a tribute to the vibrant spectrum of gender identities that enrich our world.
