The 'face' is called a "Tiki" in polynesian culture. They mainly symbolize protection. The lizard/gecko stands for regrowth, surviving from disasters. There are also symbols incorporated such as a sun which stands for a passageway to the world behing and shark teeth symbols also called "niho mano" in Polynesian language. Shark teeth represents shelter and power.
