The Spectator Redesign

The Spectator Redesign
Motivation
I had been running the design department of Seattle University's school newspaper, The Spectator, when we got a new Editor-in-Cheif. The new Editor-in-Cheif had a different vision for the newspaper - he wanted full page, long-form articles detailing hyper-local events. We agreed that design would have to play a larger role in this new approach; without design, a full page block of text would look too overwhelming. We needed to use design to foster interest in stories and provide entry points into articles.

Approach
This discussion was followed by a three month redesign of the entire paper. We changed everything from the visual style to the page size. Since our target market was college-aged students, we wanted a fun, youthful design that would be flexible enough to use for several years. We ended the redesign with a great looking paper and 24 InDesign templates to be used for each issue.

Below, you can see examples of the identity I developed and the pages I designed.

The Cover
We wanted the cover to be attention grabbing, and one that would interest students enough to pick it up. We gave up on putting articles on the cover and opted in for full-page illustrations or photos, along with a few teases for internal articles.

Also, I designed the masthead myself. It is probably the best logo I've ever designed.

The Spectator Redesign

In my two years as Lead Design at The Spectator, I made some pretty nice spreads and lead one massive redesign. Check it out!
