Rawane Khalil's profile

the daily life. الاحداث" اليومية"

The Lebanese civil war that took place in the years 1975-1990 is one that was known for its monstrosity.  fifteen years of killings, of bombings, of chaos. Fifteen years, of destruction of buildings, of streets, of people, of lives, and of a country.
That is all we remember from those years. That is what the media highlights, and that is what remains in the collective memory of a people that struggles every day not to get sucked back into the vicious cycle of death.
What my project aims to do is revive memories that are neglected and overshadowed by others. It is to highlight the lives of the ordinary men, women and families,  rather than highlight the already over-glorified political struggles. Giving power to the daily lives of civilians rather than the guns of the warlords.
My project is a 12 page newspaper, the one of April 14th 1975, the day the war supposedly began. All the political issues and articles that were featured in that issue are removed and replaced by my own visual narrative, based on stories that i have collected from people, books,  and newspaper archives.
This is my attempt at giving recognition to the Lebanese people and their will to adapt and survive.
