Voor mijn afstudeerwerk ben ik gaan fotograferen bij een bruin café. Ik heb het DNA gepakt van de plaats, en die reikt verder dan alles wat te zien valt als je er een middagje komt kijken. Jarenlang ben ik hier met regelmaat geweest en dat is terug te zien in het werk en de keuzes die zijn genomen.
Wat deze plaats maakt is de mate van saamhorigheid, connectie. Naast dat ik een plaats, uniek in zijn soort, heb vastgelegd heb ik ook een 'uitstervend' gezelschap te pakken. Zowel de mensen zijn er bijzonder door hun waarden en normen, als een bruin café wat zo onafhankelijk mogelijk probeert te zijn.
De drukken zijn gemaakt van sigaretten as, gerookt door de bezoekers. De sfeer van het café is zo niet alleen te zien, maar ook te ruiken in de drukken. Omdat dit om een plek gaat die langzaam verdwijnt, ofwel in rook op gaat, is dit ook symbolisch kenmerkend voor de situatie van het café. Tevens de aanleiding van mijn project.
De actualiteit verteld ons dat bruine cafés uit ons straat beeld verdwijnen, wat het werk ook actueel maakt voor andere locaties naast deze.
Buiten de functie als 'bedankje' voor het café en zijn gasten, en zijn functie als 'vistekaartje' en om aandacht te vragen voor uitstervende traditie, is het ook uit protest. De plek die ik hier heb vastgelegd heeft een eigenwijs karakter wat schopt tegen de grote massa. Digitalisering en controles, dat wordt aan de laars gelapt. Het is en blijft een ouderwetse plek die vasthoud aan hoe het ooit is ontstaan. Ook is dit café het laatste café wat de rokerswet negeerde, tot protesten op straat aan toe.

For my graduation work I took photographs at a brown café. I took the DNA from the site, and it goes beyond anything you can see if you come and look there for an afternoon. I have been here regularly for years and that is reflected in the work and the choices that have been made.

What makes this place is the level of togetherness, connection. Besides capturing a place that is unique in its kind, I also captured a 'dying' company. The people there are special because of their values and norms, as well as a brown café that tries to be as independent as possible.
The prints are made from cigarette ash, smoked by visitors. The atmosphere of the café can not only be seen, but also smelled in the prints. Because this is a place that slowly disappears, or goes up in smoke, this is also symbolically characteristic of the situation of the café. Also the reason for my project.
Current events tell us that brown cafés are disappearing from our street scene, which also makes the work relevant for other locations besides this one.
Besides its function as a 'thank you' for the café and its guests, and it's function as a 'business card' and to draw attention to dying tradition, it is also a protest. The place I have captured here has a stubborn character that rubs off on the masses. Digitization and controls are being ignored. It is and remains an old-fashioned place that holds on to how it originated. This café is also the last café that ignored the smoking law, even leading to protests on the street.
sensory archiving with blueprints
In addition to the screen prints of cigarette ash, I also visualized the café by making blueprints from typical photos. They were developed in a bath of beer, to maintain the atmosphere. It comes from the idea of sensory archiving.
Method of approach
I started with an open approach to this place, and started taking pictures of everything and everyone. Only after some time and often looking over the photos did I come up with an idea: I am going to focus on the most important, distinguishing elements.
I made a top 3 of those:

I looked for these top 3 in my photos and found them. I screen printed the images that I found most representative of my top 3 with ash. The order is also translated into the size of the prints. These factors could meet the requirements for monumental status, thus extending its duration. My goal.
Exhibition & reactions
The work has been moved to the top floor of the café to be exhibited. The cultural value was emphasized. The visitors to the café loved being part of this project. The café owners were also very happy with this; it felt like a helping hand to them. The new approach got people talking to each other about this subject.
