MEDIUM: POSTER DESIGN, PERFORMANCE ART, ZINE
In Islamic religious history, Holy Prophet PBUH used to mend the wear and tear of his clothes himself through the process of patchwork or paiwand kari. In modern day world fueled by consumerism and hoarding culture, patchwork and sustainability is seen akin to being poor. Guy Debord talks about representation in his book Society of The Spectacle, how media has moved society away from act of living into a representation of life. I created a participatory performance in the form of a workshop where paiwand kari is facilitated at different locations like storefronts, gardens, etc. This project allowed me to revive a traditional and religious practice, explore the symbolism of paiwand with repair of body and society and also explore relationship of tradition with different public spaces. The medium of particpatory performance iteself comments on the hierarchy of creative production.
The performance was accompanied with posters as a text-based public intervention and a zine which included writings shared in the performace.
