paintings of my ancestors
In this body of work, “Relating,” I discovered a deeper understanding of my father’s family and their relativity in my life. “Relating” is a series of paintings that evolved from family photographs of relatives and ancestors that I discovered in my great Aunt Helen’s trunk. Along with the photographs, there was a marvelous collection of clippings and scraps that my aunt had saved for sentimental reasons. In an effort to find some sort of connection with her and my heritage, I picked a photograph and sketched it, incorporating some of the scraps and clippings from the trunk that specifically had meaning for me in relation with the photograph. Layer upon layer, the composition progressed into its own identity.  There is comfort in knowing my ancestors have held onto memories in the same way that I do and choose to know themselves through these saved materials.
