Orlando Magic New brand identity proposal

As a long-time fan of basketball and of the NBA world, I’ve always been attracted by the image each team conveys through its logo and colors, and as a designer I thought about which organisation’s corporate identity could be improved and modernized.
The Orlando Magic’s logo, still to this day, lacks of personality compared to the other 29 teams in the league, so my aim was to redesign it maintaining some elements of the current one, but giving it a simpler and more impactful look. Also, the colors were slightly modified following the same principles.

Logo restyling

Even though the logo has been changed through years, there has never actually been a real upgrade in the design. Even the latest version indeed, still results pretty heavy and complex due to the use of many thick outlines, strong contrasts and because of the compactness of the typographic elements.
I tried to give the new logo these features: lightnesssimplicity and modernity.

Color palette

The team’s colors were changed into a brighter and more vivid chromatic scheme, that sees a royal blue as a primary color, along with white, wolf grey and navy blue; black was turned into a secondary color in addition to sky blue.

Typography

The typographic choice is based on simplyfing the aspect of the logo, making it look thinner and lighter, still maintaining the bold aspect that the previous version presented. Alongside the main font, a sans-serif like Inter was chosen to follow the same criteria, maintining a vertically structured typeface even for the body-copy.
