Screams in a veiled darkness

by Stefan F. Wirth

The Nebulous Notion of Battlefields

Nothing can be seen or heard clearly, it smells maybe, but if so, what might it smell like? After fear or death or just after mud and damp forest soil? Does it perhaps smell of the peaceful flowering meadow in the hinterland, not so far away? Maybe, but I can't see far away, can't see, whether the meadow is already blooming.

I don't see the screaming faces either, I don't know what a wink looks like just before you die. I don't know what wars are like, I have to imagine them, so I only see, hear and smell what I know or suspect or dream about.

But that's frightening, merciless, maybe that's why it's human, the slaughtering and killing human being, and also the angry, desperate, fearful, dying human being. Human beings can't learn and fight too many wars, a nebulous notation for a thoughtful mind, incomprehensible and devoid of all reason.
