Great Gatsby Book Cover
The goal of the literary themes project was to explore visual representation of themes and feelings. I first began exploring many different themes through abstract representation. I created many different roughs, both illustrative and type based, and ultimately landed on one of the themes I had been working: unrequited love. I then combined the shape and type roughs to create the image posted directly below. I then researched books with the theme of unrequited love to design a book cover using my abstract roughs. I ended up choosing The Great Gatsby. This process was really challenging and interesting for me. I enjoyed the backward-ness of exploring the theme and then relating my images to a preexisting story rather than trying to create a cover for the story itself. It was refreshing (and frustrating at times) because my mind generally sees a final product and creates a path to take to get there in the brainstorming part of the process. Here I couldn't plan for a final and I had to allow the design to direct me along the way. This project really helped me grow and step outside of my comfort zone as a designer and I very much so enjoy how the final came out.
