Branding and collateral for Seattle Asian Art Museum's 2014 special exhibition, Live On: Mr.'s Japanese Neo-Pop

As a member of the otaku subculture, Mr.’s work ties closely with the lifestyle, which is marked by obsessive interests in anime, manga, and being confined in one’s room with limited social contact. Often choosing fantasy and virtual experiences over real-world interactions.

I chose to mirror his kawaii (cute) Japanese pop art style with Underware’s playful Bello Script for the title treatment. I used a large outline to punch out of his busy and chaotic compositions. This outline creates both a graffiti and cartoon style of lettering which also suggests his work. The colour palette was inspired by his portrait of Pharrell Williams done in a mini-kyara or mini-character style of anime.
