“Kalyna” is a song of strength and power. It gives hope and strengthens the will to stand together for freedom and independence. When the Ukrainian parliament declared Ukrainian independence on the 24th of August in 1991, the deputies went out into the streets and sang this song “Ой у лузі червона калина”.
