SILS Approach Used for Emergency Appendectomy

Pasquale Storino is a Point Pleasant Beach, NJ, entrepreneur who serves as general counsel with Jenkinson’s Boardwalk. Pasquale Storino contributes to local institutions such as the K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

In February 2023, Dr. Margaret McGuire, a pediatric general surgeon, was the first member of the K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital to utilize a single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) approach to perform an emergency appendectomy. Requiring only one small incision, SILS presents technical challenges that are not an issue with traditional approaches to laparoscopic appendectomy (which employs a number of small incisions).

The surgery undertaken by Dr. McGuire involved the use of Olympus TriPort technologies. As the physician described it, she took care to hide the incision at the belly button as she targeted the appendix. This resulted in only minor scarring. As with traditional laparoscopic appendectomy, she used a thin tube with a light and camera affixed, which enabled the surgical area to be viewed in real time throughout the procedure. For the young patient, a major benefit of the SILS approach was an expedited healing and recovery time.
