The Calligrapher is a personal magazine project that showcases stories based on real life events from television shows, news articles, and books. While the contents page boasts a robust lineup of interesting stories (and place holder text), the main purpose of the magazine is to explore the flow of the articles through different layouts. For example, "The Path of the Butterflies" is a fictional story based on real life events of migrants risking their lives to come to the United States. The story is dark and winding, so I chose a similarly uncertain layout. On the other hand, "Ame Ga Fuette," a personal story, has a playful layout that holds significant meaning in the pullout quote. Although the reader may not understand the words, the imagery of the umbrella fulfills the context. The stories on the desert trade route and endangered forests are factual stories, thus the layouts are clean and get straight to the point.
