Dainty Display
This is the dainty display. It is a necklace and earring organizer using acrylic and wood to neatly display my jewelry and keep me from having to untangle my jewelry everytime I wanted to wear it. I made this because I used to keep my jewelry all in one box and it would constantly be a hassle in the morning to untangle it all. I wanted to create something that would be easy for me to use and keep everything separate and organized. I also wanted to try and use acrylic because I have never used acrylic before. So I designed a acrylic slab using inkscape and measure out all of my earrings before hand so I would know how big the cut out rectangles would need to be for certain pairs. I also etched in a floral design so when I used neopixels, it would create a glowing effect. The holes that hold the earrings are 1/16th of an inch and I cut out squares from the slab to create a place where I could hang my necklaces. Everything is easily removable so when I want to grab a pair of earrings it doesn't take me long.
My dainty display also includes neopixels that turn on via button. It lights up the acrylic slab pink and can serve as a nightlight. The experience of making this project was meaningful to me because I wanted to make something for myself that I needed rather than going out and buying it. And while making this I was able to add my personal touch and that is meaningful to me because I can claim that it is mine, it is unique, and I designed it.
Steps I Took To Get There
It started with a sketch which I then had to edit to make it more accurate. The acrylic slab is now 14 inches tall and the rectangles are 3.5 inches, 2.5 inches, 2 inches, and 1 inch. And the width of my slab is 11 inches. I then created this in tinkercad and laser cut it out.
I practiced laser cutting it with foam core to make sure it all fit and the measurements were right. Then I did a final cut with acrylic. After this I cleaned the acrylic and started to code my neopixels using a button press function to make them light up. The I proceeded to go to the wood shop and make the wooden stand for my stand where I cut it with a table saw halfway through about 1/2 inch wide to fit the neopixels and slide the slab in to. Then I put it all together. I hot glued the neopixels in to the wooden stand, and placed the acrylic slab in there and held it in place with a straw to make sure it was secure. After this I put the earrings on the stand and I was done!
