Tarrafal de Monte Trigo, on the southwest side of Santo Antao island, is a large sweep of sand protected by the mountains from the constant northeast trade winds. Like the rest of Cape Verde, water is a precious resource & is managed carefully through irrigation channels & extensive terrace farming.  Village life revolves around a plentiful fishing industry, including yellowfin tuna, sugarcane processing & increasingly tourism.
