The AREA DOMENIU collection is a monographic series, published by the Instituto Terra e Memória (ITM), within the scope of the UNESCO Chair in Humanities and Integrated Cultural Management in the Territory of the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar (IPT), in partnership with the Municipality of Mação; the Geosciences Center; Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), among other entities.
The series goal is to disseminate ongoing or completed scientific research projects, articles or abstracts, mainly in the areas of Prehistory, Archeology and Heritage Management. Its target audience is, above all, academics.
Redesigning a book collection is an opportunity for the editorial designer to design books capable of living independently, but which, together with the rest of the collection, give them a stronger and more cohesive identity.
Throughout its many volumes published so far, the AREA DOMENIU collection has never had a strong and cohesive identity. In the various volumes previously published, some have the same layout, but never the same layout is applied to all of them.
This happened because, among other reasons, there was never an identity established by a designer.
In addition to this, as in many scientific books, the volumes had little rhythm, contrast and readability, making them very difficult to read.
In this context, one of the biggest intents for the collection was to create a cohesive and strong identity, by establishing a graphic identity and a fixed layout, as well as giving it a lighter reading, by introducing rhythm and color in the layout and contrast and legibility in the choice of typography.
In contrast with other collections, such has the ARKEOS collection, all the titles of the volumes are very abstract and poetic, so for this redesign, I decided that the covers should always be abstract paintings.
In order to facilitate the experience of reading and browsing the digital volumes, in addition to the methodologies described above, some interactivity was inserted on the book's index, allowing the reader to click on the index markers, and go directly to the desired section.

This particular volume has the goal of disseminating the submited abstracts for the XXIII Encounter of the Environmental Studies of Portuguese Speaking Countries— REALP.
REALP is a network that has the global objective of promoting scientific cooperation in the area of the environment and sustainability development between Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique and Cape Verde.
The XXIII's encounter was held between 11th-15th October 2022 at Instituto Politécnico de Tomar, and it counted with dozens of presentations regarding different fields of investigation, such as design, culture, economics, archaeology, geology, heritage and patrimony.
The content of this volume is the abstracts of this encounter.
