Kaskaskia

Once a multicultural regional center in the 18th century, Kaskaskia is a small town in southern Illinois whose tumultuous crawl through history has been dictated by a combination of powerful natural and man-made forces which shaped the Mississippi River. Increasing commerce and industry purposed rivers in the area for steamboat transport, in addition to increased lumber manufacture which resulted in significant shore deforestation. Repeated flooding stripped away layers of history from the area, sharing a similar fate with other towns along the rivers.
