Okamoto Taro: A Retrospective / Exhibition Graphic

The art of Okamoto Taro (1911-1996), who is famed for his Tower of the Sun―
the central Theme Pavilion for Osaka Expo ’70 ― holds an enduring appeal for people of all generations. He was one of the most popular and widely recognized artists in postwar Japan. From 2022 to 2023, one of the largest retrospective exhibitions ever dedicated to Taro Okamoto tours three cities from Osaka, traveling to Tokyo, and then Aichi.
It was first held at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka, which had just opened in 2022.

In designing the key visual for the exhibition, designer sought to create three original designs for each city  but with a consistent visual vocabulary.
To graphically represent Okamoto’s intense energy and heat, the designer created a composition where each piece of work is on fire and colliding with one another.
The graphic designs were used for all major promotional materials, including advertisements inside the venue and at train stations, websites, and paper media such as exhibition tickets.
