Collected Strides: Leading Beyond the Track
Historically, the rules and regulations of the horse racing industry have evolved to ensure the safety of horses during their racing careers. But what happens once a horse is no longer making its owner money? Collected Strides, connects members of the horse racing industry in order to ensure the proper care of horses before, during and after their racing careers.

Background

A thorough investigation of articles, organization structures, personal stories, and raw statistics, showed that ex-racehorses do not go to good homes or retire to nice grassy fields as most expect.

Interviews with leaders in the thoroughbred aftercare industry exposed that in actuality a retired racehorse's fate often includes neglect, abuse or slaughter.

In order to effectively stop the slaying of innocent creatures, awareness of this issue needs to be raised within the racing and equine industries. Upon studying the structure of various existing organizations, it was found that this problem extends beyond racehorse owners. Trainers, racing industry officials, thoroughbred breeders, aftercare facilities, track patrons and bettors, and horse enthusiasts also need to be held accountable and work towards a solution. Although steps are being taken currently to increase funds and adoption, there is a lack of organization within these individual efforts.
