Beets is a responsive website that tracks high–school to college aged students’ eating habits. The goal is to promote healthy fruit and vegetable consumption and to make students aware of the fruits and vegetables they are eating. The app uses music to measure the success of a student’s eating habits, playing songs at the end of each day. The audio tracks get progressively more complicated or fun with more healthy eating decisions.
The project was begun under a grant from Dr. Wendy White, with Iowa State University. A team of programmers, designers, recording artists and food scientists took on the project. Andrea Quam was the art director of the project, while Tam Vo and I were the graphic/web designers.
Join/Sign in page, before gaining access to site
Join/Update information page prior to fully accessing site. If logged in, information will be pre-fllled-in. However, the user may make any changes that they choose to at this time, such as those in activity level for the day.
Announcements page, important as this application/website will be used primarily in a classroom environment.
Resting page: user's food entry history for the day. The page has a calendar function that can be explored to display specific days' food intake.
Add entry page: user can add the foods they've eaten so that the amount of fruits/vegetables they've eaten can be recorded and be counted towards their goal.
Weekly Tracker Graph with Popup: after submitting food entries, the user is taken to the graph page. On the page load, a pop–up with the user's status and helpful fruit/vegetable facts/tips will appear. The song will play at this time so that there is both audio and visual reinforcement in how the user is doing towards reaching their intake goals.
Weekly Tracker Graph: after the pop–up is exited, or if the page is accessed without triggering the pop–up, a graph of progress versus goals can be seen by the user.
User's History Report: a table of all the entries the user has made during their time on the site. It can be exported as an Excel spreadsheet. This is helpful for students to finish their assignments.
User's Profile page, can be edited even after the preliminary sign-in edits.
