Daan Brand's profile

New York Times magazine

New York Times Magazine commissioned me to do a series of photo-illustrations for their main article about Obama's same sex marriage policy. Including the cover.
We agreed early in the process on using obvious marriage symbols like the cake , the weddingbouquet and champagne. All with clear references to or executed in the colors of the rainbow flag.

The final cover!

My first cover option. Still like it a lot , but understand why the 'catching Obama' makes a better cover.
Obama's hand reaching out to acccept a piece of rainbow cake.
This cake was made by the incredibly talented and cooperative Marianne Koorn from le Beau Gateau in Amsterdam.

My first option for the champagne shot.
With a hand made label by me of vice-president Biden.
He is acclaimed to be the one who started this entire process.
This shot was a one-taker. It was shot on camera , the bottle is hanging from a wire.
I only adjusted the colors of the glasses afterwards.

And the shot as chosen. Becuase of the Biden portrait (he already had an image in this series) we had to go for  this option.
The image of vice-president Joe Biden.
With his renowned smile and a rainbowflag pinned on this print of him.
