Kolach (bread)
Kalach, kolach - white ceremonial bread of a special shape, baked from twisted and interlaced dough. They are baked from the finished dough, as a rule, woven from three or four rolls. Often there is a hole in the middle of the kalachi. Ukrainian kolaches are made by weaving dough from wheat flour into ring-shaped or oblong shapes. They are a symbol of good luck, well-being and good generosity, and they are traditionally prepared for Svyat-Vechir (Holy Supper), a Ukrainian ritual on the eve of Christmas.
Bublik
Bublik — a culinary product, wheat dough in a ring, boiled in water or treated with hot steam, and then baked. Depending on the size, moisture and softness, it can have different names, also different names can be used in different regions.
Korovai
Korovai — a large round loose bread with dough decorations. It is usually baked for weddings or other celebrations and holidays, performs festive and ceremonial functions. The term "Korovai" was widespread not only in Ukraine, but also in all Slavic lands. Ukrainians, unlike other peoples, used the term "loaf" in the past to call only ceremonial bread. It was usually a tall round bonfire decorated with flowers, cones and dough birds. According to an ancient tradition, if a girl married "dishonestly" (lost her virginity before marriage), no bread was baked at all for her wedding.
Pierogi
Pierogi — Ukrainian national dish in the form of boiled unleavened dough and filling made of potatoes, meat, mushrooms, vegetables, fruits, berries and cheese. Dumplings are one of the symbols of Ukrainian national cuisine. Dumplings are traditionally identified with the moon, because they resemble it in shape and were used by our Ukrainian ancestors as sacrificial food dedicated to the goddess of water. Dumplings with cheese were sacrificed near wells with spring water.
