Ceremonial Cross- Crucifiction

A ceremonial cross in 1000° silver and 24-carat gold
A beautiful cross crafted in 1689 for Saint John’s church that was built by the people of Chios living in Galatas of Constantinople. During Christian ceremonies, the congregation carried it with devotion around the slip roads of their town, fixed on a mast. When the ceremony ended, the valued cross took its place again on the altar of the church.

The precious heirloom belongs to the Benaki Museum’s collection including the sacred objects brought by the Greek refugees to their motherland after the ravage of Asia Minor in 1922.

The authentic cross is made of silver sheeting and is adorned with gold plated images. The Crucifix is depicted in the center while the four evangelists and their symbols adorn the four extremities of the cross.

This precious piece has been reproduced in pure silver 1000° and 24-carat gold and bears the Benaki Museum’s seal of authenticity. Each cross is finished by hand and is offered on a velvet background with a frame in silver hues
