A Brief Overview of Hypothermia

Judson Russell Grosvenor serves as a dock hand at Lauderdale Marina in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. His responsibilities include tying up boats, yachts, and other water vessels. On November 17th, Judson Russell Grosvenor saved a man from drowning. The man survived but suffered hypothermia and required urgent medical attention.

Hypothermia happens when a person's body temperature drastically drops after falling into cold water. It's also possible to experience hypothermia in warmer water, especially if the water's temperature is significantly lower than the body's. The condition occurs when the body temperature falls below 97F to 99F.

In addition, people working outside or in bad weather are prone to hypothermia when they do not warm their bodies to the optimal temperatures.

A person's heart, neurological system, and vital organs can't function normally when their body temperature decreases. Hypothermia impacts a person's respiratory and nervous systems, restricting oxygen flow to the heart and brain and eventually causing the system to shut down completely, resulting in death.
