Taradale Road Pump Station, Napier, Structural Concepts

This was a design and build project, my role was to scheme up the project to fit with the contractors method of construction, carry out final design, detail the design via hand sketches for the draftsman to use in the production of CAD drawings, answer the peer review questions, site queries, and carryout construction monitoring during the construction for PS4 sign off at the end.

This pump station was founded on a mass concrete base some 1.5m thick which was founded at more than 8.0m-9.0m below the ground level and well below the adjacent storm-water open drain by at least 5.0m, we were also below the ground water table by some considerable depth. The mass concrete base was used to weigh down the pump station from floating, although the walls, base & roof were 500mm thick it was still buoyant when empty. Once finished the pump station was mostly below ground with only a very small building placed on top which was constructed from reinforced concrete block masonry. The inside of the pump station was lined with a PVC 4-5mm thick liner which was fully welded to give 100 year plus service life. If damaged the liner can be site welded to repair holes or damaged areas.
