Whammy Coffee Co is a small specialty coffee roaster in Birmingham, Alabama. The founder and owner, Mitch, wanted to create a brand that allowed for creative spontaneity. Mitch likes to experiment and play around with his roasts. He rarely makes the same coffee twice and wanted Whammy to reflect that, leaving room to play around with design. It’s not an easy challenge to create a coherent brand identity system that allows for constant change. But we landed in a flexible concept where each part is changeable and interchangeable, on a scale where the caffeine level can be turned all the way up to a double espresso shot. Meaning maximalist in the amount of elements and colors used. He can also opt for a minimalist approach, where very few elements are colors are utlized. We mixed in some classic americana inspired mascots, a Pangram Pangram font and a full spectrum color palette. Creating that room for spontaneity and adding playfulness means Whammy is the surprise you recognize.
