Choince Dominoes was a project directed towards creating the game of dominoes in a new way. I came at this project wanting to really be able to connect to a certain group of people. Through the creation process it came about that I would not only be able to connect to one, but two groups. One of which is men, but on the other hand it is also striking a chord with vintage lovers as well.
Choince comes from the combination of choice and chance. The basis of the game is that you would try to choose the base pieces, and then draw from an assorted 24 sliders.
Through the packaging process, I was thinking of how it would be possible for myself to repurpose instead of creating a simple wooden box that would go to waste. So, I thought of things that surrounded my concept as a whole. Realizing that the feeling that this box gave me was similar to old speakeasys, my mind kept thinking of cigars and the avid followers that stigma attaches, classy. So as you lift each piece of Choince Dominoes, it reveals a solid, quarter inch thick piece of porous balsa wood. The reasoning behind the balso wood is that it would act as the sponge of a humidor for your collection of cigars. This way you would then be able to store and present them to your buddies on game night!
Each base piece has a slider piece that is interchangable throughout the game.
In summarizing this project, there were a lot of learned mediums I was able to use as a playground. Also, it was great creating icons, tangible pieces to the game, and also repurposing the packaging after opening so that waste was at a minimum.
