T H E O T O K O S
Being Greek Orthodox, Mary (the 'Theotokos') is a beautiful symbol of womanity, as well as perseverance. Within the last two years or so, I took a liking to Iconography, and wish to pursue it eventually. However, to make icons for churches, one must be ordained - in the meantime, I like to practice.
The illustrated Greek Orthodox version of Mary is a bit harsh in my opinion; she looks old, tired and dull. This is never how I've imagined her, and so, came up with my own artistic interpretation. I also placed the words to "Ave Maria" around her, one of my favorite songs and of course, in Latin.
Perhaps a bit Disney-esque (as some have related my version), I don't mind thinking that the other female icons I grew up with somehow blended into the heavenly ones, creating a diversified and strong foundation for me to epitomize and wonder about as a girl.
She is my “Version” Mary.
