What defines a neighborhood? More specifically, what defines the population of people that lives within a given neighborhood? The most significant defining factor is not a statistic. Nor is it a singular influential person, a rich history, or a wealthy class of inhabitants. Rather, it is in the relationship of one member of the neighborhood to another, regardless of how any possible disparity in their respective social or economic class. To have the ability to help is a gift, but to follow through and share that gift with others is a responsibility and an act of true kindness.
This is what lies at the heart of community, and at the heart of the new home for More than a Soup Kitchen [MSK]. For over 25 years, the services provided by and the community formed through the MSK have continued to be some of the most genuine in West Philadelphia. Through dynamic, responsible architecture that focuses on meaningful interaction between its inhabitants, MSK aims to strengthen the already existing relationships between the citizens of west philadelphia, the students of the university of pennsylvania, and those in need within the community. These relationships are what make more than a soup kitchen true to its name and mission.
