'Signs of Life' - A Playful Introduction to Auslan

'Signs of Life' - A Playful Introduction to Auslan
The ‘Signs of Life’ concept aims to create a sense of community between the Deaf and hearing societies. Designed for all users, the concept more specifically targets younger children of middle and junior school ages. The design addresses the theme of Auslan education, aiming to creatively engage children into learning beginner Auslan signs. The concept creates a ludic experience that not only forms a visually intriguing installation but sparks an interest into studying Auslan for young Australians.

The design makes use of various digital technologies, including motion sensors and projection. This combination of digital technologies into a tangible space creates an engaging experience for users, eliminating the feel of education driving the design idea.
Situated in front of a podium fixed with a motion sensor, when a user approaches the stand, the screen will continue to wait. Following basic instructions listed, users have the opportunity to mimic basic Auslan animal signs, butterflies and bees, to learn the correct hand postures and techniques. When the hand sensor successfully identifies a well-formed sign, the projection will fill with a glowing version of the animal signed.

In creating a playful and responsive experience the interaction creates a memorable experience for users, where young minds can remember the interaction in a positive light, forging memories that will associate animal words with their corresponding Auslan sign.
The 'Signs of Life' experience was created with a number of tools and software. This includes, Dall-E AI software to generate the initial look and feel of the experience. Blender to 3D model the bee and butterfly animations. A Leap Motion Controller for motion detection and Unity games development software to program the interactivity using the motion sensor.
A user experience report was written to evaluate the overall effectiveness of the interactive experience. This report has been attached as a file to this post for further reading.
