Feel Your Dreams with Pinggan Peranakan

Feel Your Dreams with Pinggan Peranakan

Background
In Singapore today, the term “Peranakan” generally refers to a person of mixed Chinese and Malay/Indonesian heritage.

The Peranakan culture is a melding of Chinese and Malay/Indonesian traditions, creating an aesthetic that is eye-catching, colourful and exquisitely detailed. Chinese Peranakan is particularly known for their distinctive, brightly coloured tableware (plates, bowls, spoons, etc.) called "nyonyaware".

Problem
Most plate packaging lacks appeal when someone buys a plate. This makes it boring
and visually unappealing. Plate packaging only keeps the plate protected but doesn’t
tell much about the plate itself.

Solution
As the target audience for this project is mainly locals and tourists, I decided to make a packaging that is not only more aesthetically pleasing but also gives them a background of Peranakan culture and its design. Through the plate packaging, they can learn more about the Peranakan culture and keep a gift for themselves. They can use the packaging as a display for the plate or if not, they can reuse the packaging for other purposes. I kept the colours for the packaging to only two colours which are turquoise and cream as turquoise is one of the significant colours in Peranakan culture that symbolizes wisdom and good fortune while the cream colour is to create contrast with the turquoise. The Peranakan plate itself is already very colourful so the packaging colours would not overpower the plate designs.
