MTN8 Rebrand


MTN8 is the current branding for a South African soccer cup competition launched in 1972 for teams who finished in the top 8 positions of the league table of the country’s preceding top-flight league (currently the DStv Premiership) season. The winners receive R8 million and the competition’s trophy, which is one of the three domestic trophies attainable by its competitors each soccer season.

With the refresh of the MTN brand in 2022, the MTN8 tournament needed to be rebranded to align to its new positioning and distinctive corporate identity. To honor the history of this well-known tournament, we retained the 8 shape within the rebrand by recreating it with our iconic MTN oval to create distinction and impact in market – and keeping the memory structure of the number that’s been known to so many over the years.
