The Moodmaker - Brushing teeth with play

This project was developed during the course "Designing for Playful Experiences" at Designskolen Kolding.
Product Design and Coding: Francesco Alosio; Visual Design and Sound: Mariagiulia Sardu; Visual and Communication Design: Laura Reng.
THE CONCEPT
The Moodmaker is a concept and a working prototype for an add-on for toothbrushes that generates music based on different movements, creating a more playful experience when brushing teeth. It is designed for families with children around 5 years old who are learning to be independent in the bathroom. The Moodmaker aims to improve the mood of children during bathroom routines and support parents who have a hard time during this transition. By allowing them to play music together while brushing teeth, it creates the opportunity to share and enjoy a fun moment instead of the usual stressful routine.
The device can also be used by adults to add a playful element to an everyday moment, individually, as a couple, or with friends.
WHY?
We developed the Moodmaker after talking with various parents and finding out that one of the most stressful moments of their day is when they need toddlers to brush their teeth. This often brings conflicts and discussion into their routines, which could instead be filled with quality family time.
THE PROCESS
The Moodmaker was created by a cross-disciplinary team. The process involved user testing with children and adults, iterations, and experiments with concepts, different technologies and graphics.
PROTOTYPES
We currently have two prototypes: one is a working prototype that has the technological features, and the other is an appearance prototype that shows what the final object will look like.

The working prototype is created using Arduino IDE. The concept for the sound was translated into MIDI note numbers that play based on the movements of the hand.  The sound design aims to communicate a sense of dreaminess and magic. The notes are chosen so that multiple add-ons can be used at the same time (as in the case of a family brushing teeth together) but the music will still remain harmonious.
The appearance prototype shows the shape and visual pattern of the add-on in its final size. The material and shape make it attachable to the most common models of toothbrushes, and after being attached, the add-on can also act as a toothbrush stand.
THE PATTERN
The pattern that decorates the add-on was created to reflect the concept. The shapes and colors pop out from the dark background, making it more alive, just like the device brings a sparkle into routines. Different iterations of the pattern were tested to achieve a result that was perceived as having the right features.
