MIDI MIXER
DJ Bluetooth Device
This MIDI Mixer, nicknamed "Cloud Nine" after my DJ name, is a programmed bluetooth device that works for playing music and adding different sounds to mix with. This features six buttons and three turn-knobs. The controls were designed with the web application AudioTool in mind, but the controller can work for other music programs.
Making the MIDI Mixer
Design in EasyEDA
There were two PCBs used for this project. My professor, Zane Cochran, gave me the schematic on EasyEDA. I placed some of the components and wired the PCB myself.
The Coding
I used Arduino for the MIDI Mixer code. Zane Cochran provided the code for the class.
The Buttons
There are six buttons and three knobs total in my MIDI Mixer. The top left button takes your back to the "main page", where you can choose which color section to go to. Each color section has different controls, which I specified for each song. For example, the red section was just for the first song I played, which was "Hello" by Martin Solveig and Dragonette. One button played/muted the song "Hello", one button played/muted the bass, one button played/muted the drum beat, and another button played/muted a special effect sound. One knob raised/lowered the volume for the song "Hello", and the middle knob raised/lowered the volume for the next song, "The Sound" by The 1975.
Enclosure Design
(from left to right) Isometric view of front enclosure, isometric view of back enclosure, top view of enclosure, and isometric view of knob design.
I created a 3D model of the PCB enclosure on Fusion 360. I then used this to laser cut an enclosure out of acrylic. I also designed a top for the knobs in Fusion 360 for easier use. I added a cloud design to fit my DJ name and then used a resin printer to make them.
Making the Music
I made the music set for the rave using AudioTool. I combined well-known songs with different bass and drum beats. Here are the songs that I used:
"Hello" - Martin Solveig and Dragonette
"The Sound" - The 1975
"Feel So Close" - Calvin Harris
"Never Gonna Give You Up" - Rick Astley
"Blinded Me with Science" - Thomas Dolby
The Performance
On Halloween 2022, we had our rave at HackBerry Lab and performed our music sets. We used the MIDI Mixers to perform the music. We had 178 students attend.
