The people of Upper Egypt usually hold ceremonies for the spear in commemoration of the righteous saints of God and to celebrate religious occasions, the most prominent of which, of course, is the anniversary of the Prophet's birthday. Al-Marmah is one of the most popular games in the south, the arts of which are passed down from generation to generation. In “Marmah” Qena, as in most of its Sa’idiya counterparts, the knights representing the various tribes and families go out on horseback to the large squares that are designated for the celebration. عادة ما يقيم أهالى الصعيد احتفالات لـ«المرماح» إحياء لذكرى أولياء الله الصالحين والاحتفاء بالمناسبات الدينية, ومن أبرزها بالطبع، ذكرى المولد النبوى الشريف. و«المرماح» من أشهر الألعاب الشعبية فى الجنوب التى يتوارث فنونها أبناؤه جيلا بعد جيل. ففى «مرماح» قنا كما فى أغلب نظيراتها الصعيدية، يخرج الفرسان الممثلون لمختلف القبائل والعائلات على ظهر الخيل قاصدين الساحات الكبيرة التى يتم تخصيصها لإقامة الاحتفال. وهناك يستعرضون مهاراتهم فى ركوب الخيل، على وقع موسيقى المزمار والربابة والطبل الصداح
