Visualised Quote Typography Project

On the occasion of the International Mother Language Day, celebrated on February 21st, at least 100 people, interpreters of the NGO METAdrasi and students of AKTO College of Art & Design, collaborated on an ambitious collective project: creating original visual on "Words and Thoughts from around the World".

Each country was represented by a national poem, a proverb or a quote with social impact. Each designer undertook the design of one or two posters following the method of Concrete Poetry, visualising the poems or the quotes in a unique typographic manner.

The bried that I received, was about Italy and the quote that I came up with visualising was inspired by the anti-war-meaning quote of the famous Italian composer Giuseppe Ierna: "Million years of wars between people have decimated the universal population. Now, we have the weapons to be all destroyed once and for all.'' Through the typography is created the shape of a nuclear bomb, which is the most dangerous and lethal waepon worldwidely, nowadays. The combination of yellow and black symbolizes the radiation, exactly as its acquainted symbol.

The exhibition held by METAdrasi and AKTO College, took place during February 2014, at Tecnopolis City of Athens, in a quite festive spirit.

Με αφορμή την Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Μητρικής Γλώσσας, που γιορτάζεται στις 21 Φεβρουαρίου, τουλάχιστον 100 άτομα, διερμηνείς της Μη Κυβερνητικής Οργάνωσης ΜΕΤΑδραση και σπουδαστές του Κολεγίου Τέχνης & Design ΑΚΤΟ, συνεργάστηκαν σε ένα φιλόδοξο ομαδικό project: τη δημιουργία πρωτότυπων εικαστικών με θέμα «Λέξεις και Σκέψεις απ' όλον τον Κόσμο». Κάθε χώρα εκπροσωπήθηκε είτε από ένα εθνικό ποίημα, παροιμία ή γνωμικό με κοινωνικό περιεχόμενο και αντίκτυπο. Κάθε σχεδιαστής ανέλαβε να σχεδιάσει από ένα ή δύο posters ακολουθώντας τη μέθοδο του Concrete Poetry, οπτικοποιώντας τα ποιήματα ή γνωμικά που του δόθηκαν, με κάποια μοναδική τυπογραφική σύνθεση.

Το brief το οποίο μου δόθηκε, αντιπροσώπευε την Ιταλία και το γνωμικό το οποίο κλήθηκα να οπτικοποίησω ήταν ένα αντιπολεμικό απόφθεγμα του γνωστού Ιταλού συνθέτη Giuseppe Ierna: "Χιλιάδες χρόνια πολέμων μεταξύ των ανθρώπων έχουν αποδεκατίσει τον ανθρώπινο πληθυσμό. Τώρα έχουμε τα όπλα να αποτελειωθούμε όλοι μια και καλή." Μέσω της τυπογραφικής σύνθεσης δημιουργείται το σχήμα μίας πυρηνικής βόμβας, η οποία είναι το πιο επικίνδυνο και θανατηφόρο όπλο παγκοσμίως σήμερα. Ο χρωματικός συνδυασμός κίτρινου-μαύρου συμβολίζει τη ραδιενέργεια, ακριβώς όπως και το γνωστό σε όλους σύμβολό της.

Η έκθεση πραγματοποιήθηκε με μεγάλη επιτυχία το Φεβρουάριο του 2014, στην Τεχνόπολις του Δήμου Αθηναίων.
