Neglect - A Sense of Place

The 185 hectare vicinity of East Coast Park always seems to be littered with belongings abandoned by their owners; especially along the scenic coastline. These objects aren’t trash, or things to be discarded like food packaging, but precious items such as shoes, bags and bikes. Coming from Indonesia, this strange phenomenon of leaving your belongings behind, away from your watchful eye is unheard of, as it would most likely be seized by a passerbyer. It would be as if you were knowingly permitting a stranger to take your things away. These neglected items also raise the question of where their owners have wandered off to, as well as the trust that has been built within the Singaporean community where your mind can be at peace as you walk barefoot along the beach, leaving your bikes, shoes and backpack in the shade afar.
