On the Danforth (OTD) is a student-run magazine published mostly by Centennial College's Publishing Program students, and I was a graphic designer for the summer issue. The theme for our issue of OTD was "Unravelling the Danforth." We focused on the theme of thread flowing across the pages to reflect this.
THE COVER
Based on the theme our team chose, I decided to illustrate an embroidered image using Danforth landmarks that best symbolized the essence of the area. I was influenced by the illustration-heavy style of the faux magazine Tokyoiter, as I wanted to keep our cover fairly minimalistic.
I drew the illustration in Procreate and then converted it to Photoshop and finished the cover in InDesign. Our team then decided on a coral background and light yellow typography together because we thought it would best fit the tone of a summer issue.
INTERIOR PAGES
In the layout for "Deities Escaped Olympus," I continued the motif of the string that ran throughout the rest of the issue. The author of this article also asked if I could take the individual photos of the Greek God sidewalk paintings featured in the piece and turn them into a quilt. I used Procreate to do this and again converted it to Photoshop. Additionally, I created the needle on the bottom of the second page in Illustrator.
In this layout, I used Illustrator to create a record to match the theme of the article. I also manipulated the thread into a sound wave.
The article "Comedy Bar" included a lot of text so I kept the design fairly simple. I used an image from the bar and incorporated the flow of the thread into the sign's arrow. I also included the exclamation "lol" written with the thread.
Note: these pages are the final design that I created; however, in our final print of the magazine, there was some movement and small changes made. All credit for the articles written go to the authors Puja, Chris, and Anna Maria.
