Understanding the Games Industry

The Publisher: At the top of the Games Industry is the publisher, the publisher(s) is the person or people that have made a deal with the Owners of the game they will be publishing and basically publish that game for them.

Owners/Senior Management: The Owners or Senior Management are the top dogs in the creation of this game it's their idea being made reality, but for that to happen they need to negotiate a deal with the publisher in order to get this published and also hire people with experience to make the game for them, which leads us onto...

Admin Support Teams and Development Support Teams: These two teams are the support of the project, let's start with the Admin Support Teams as they manage the financial and legal side of game producing, if the company gets stuck in some controversial or offensive allegations the Admin Support team ensures that those allegations are cleared, for example if the company makes a game that is seen as being offensive and a lawsuit is made against the company it is the admin support teams job to make sure they don't lose the lawsuit and get sued for however much they are being sued for.
The Development Support Teams are essentially quality control checkers, they ensure that the finished product is met to the standards expected, check the different elements of the game such as graphics, sounds, design making sure it's HD and clean, they also employ someone to go out and doing advertising work and hype work for the game.

Technical/Creative/Design Managers: Next in the organisational structure comes the managers of three different categories let's start with the Technical Manager the job the Technical manager is to ensure that the programmers are keeping to their work and everything is getting done concerning programming. The Creative Manager ensures that the Concept art, 2D and 3D modelling and Animations for the characters in the games gets done before the deadline. The Design Manager ensures that the levels are being designed accordingly to the brief given they make sure that the elements of the levels are HD and clean, for example the Graphics, the textures, lighting and shading as well as fog.

Programmers/Artists/Designers: The job of the Programmers, Artists and Designers is to go ahead and Program the game, Model the characters and design levels.

The organisational structure for Rockstar is different to the generalised structure, Where as you can see above they have additional positions above all the Programmers, Technicians and Artists.

Smaller Development Teams

In the games industry there are the top dogs of gaming, EA, Rockstar, CryTek, Media-Molecule and Infinity ward are just a few of many famous and big games companies and there can be a lot of competition between these companies and it's especially hard to make a game in the industry as a smaller development team such as Mojang who are the creators of mine craft and ranked #9th in the TOP 10 sold games of 2013 so here's how smaller development teams work.

Programmers: Programmers basically work on the Artificial Intelligence, Game Engine, Online compatibility, Audio, Special effects and tools that are the building blocks of a game, if you don't know where to get started then a programmer is the ideal place to begin as a programming are the building blocks and support structure a game needs to run, without it then why bother?

Technical Manager: Again in the bigger companies it's pretty much the same structure, you have the Technical Manager ensuring the project meets the deadline for the programming side

Lead Programmer: Lead Programmer leads the Programmers and Junior Programmers to getting the engine finished along with audio and tools too on time.

Programmers: Constructing the building blocks or support structure of the game consisting of the AI, Engine, Online and Audio etc...

Junior Programmers: Straight Outta' University, employed to do bits and bobs here and there with the programming, maybe a bit on AI, Maybe a bit on Audio.

Artists: Artists basically work on the 3D Modelling, Technical side of modelling, Visual effects, Concept Art, Graphical User Interface and textures and the artists designs these textures and artwork which will be later used by level designers who will use the textures made to texture buildings, characters and other objects in the game.

Art Manager: The manager that ensures all artwork is completed and possibly at times helps out

Lead Artist/Animators: Lead Artists/Animators ensure all animations and artwork is done, almost the same as the Art manager except they work along side the Artists and Animators.

Programmes such as Autodesk 3DSMAX, Autodesk MayaTM and Zbrush are used mainly for the modelling and animati

Artists/Animators: Doing motion capture for character animations as well as texturizing the characters for the game, Making different sprites and modelling different models and overall ensuring everything is well done

Junior Artists/Animators: Employed to assist the Artists and Animators with the parts needed to construct the characters animations and concept artwork.

Designers: Designers work solely on the Story development and Level editing, getting a HD and clean setting to the game as well as making it run along side the story developed.

Design Manager: The manager that ensures aall of the storyline is logical and interesting for the game to follow as well as inspecting the level edits the Designers have made.

Lead Designer: The Lead Designer ensures as well as contributes to the story development and level edits.

Designers: Developing the story, coming up with ideas and plot twists the Designers develop the majority of the story as well as the levels.

Junior Designers: Employed to assist the Designers with the parts needed to construct the levels and Story

Mojang Organisational Structure, Having researched about for the way in which Mojang is Organisationally structured i found that everything stated above is the same for Mojang and this is how they set out their company structure.
