Globalization as a process is characterized by a number of sub-processes all of which can have a disruptive impact on the political, economic and social systems that are in operation in different parts of North Africa and the Middle East. Such disruptions could in turn lead to the outbreak of political unrest in this part of the world, and that includes the emergence of terrorist activities as well. This assignment prepares an outline for a research paper, detailing how the paper will investigate the topic of globalization and the impact that this is seen to have on the phenomenon of terrorism. The paper argues that globalization has a direct influence on the occurrence and spread of terrorism.
Globalization in the most essential sense of the term is defined as an intensification and extension when it comes to the exchange of goods and services. Terrorism on the other hand refers to the perpetration of acts of terror that are aimed at instigating fear in people who are at the receiving end of such acts. Terrorism claims lives and it is seen to wreck despair and havoc all around.Terrorism is synonymous with destruction and decay and as such, it is the worst ill to have plagued mankind until date. Terrorism can take place in a variety of different forms and manners. To begin with, terrorism can be state sponsored and it can also be performed by terrorist outfits. Globalization and terrorism are considered to be symbiotic terms, with one feeding off the other and vice versa.
It is believed that the global exchange of ideas, goods and services is something that has a direct influence on the outbreak and the spread of terrorist activities. The more people travel, the more people exchange thought processes, the more easy it is for terrorist outfits to get their message across to the people concerned, brainwashing vulnerable sections of a country’s population and luring them into engaging in acts of terror. In fact there are a number of specific ways by which the process of globalization can be exploited on the part of terrorists, such as the easy transportation of drugs and illicit substances, the recruitment of large sections of people on the move to join their cause etc. Terrorists can also take advantage of the fact that people congregate in crowds in large numbers for travel and for entertainment and perpetrate their acts of terror here, succeeding in spreading the fear and the destruction that they desire to spread.
This paper engages in a detailed study and analysis of the type of impact that globalization can have on the act of terrorism. It looks to assess specifically how globalization has facilitated the spurt of terrorist activities and how states need to take cognizance of this in order to come up with the type of measures and mechanisms that are needed in order to bring terrorism under control. While preventing terrorism is no mean task, states must take on a proactive approach to combat the issue in the best way possible.
