SUSTRACCIÓN
(Editorial)
Sustracción is the result of an editorial collaboration with Andamio, around the photography of architect Fernando Ituarte on the marble mines of Carrara, Italy.

Savvy Studio developed a graphic language that conveys the concepts abstracted from Ituarte’s work: subtraction vs. addition.

Parting from the fact that architecture uses both methods for the creation of space, we can say that the same principles are used within both design and print.

In order to create, you need to add or remove matter.

In this particular case, it relates to ink vs. paper. We talk about positive and negative spaces, expressed in a simple and effective manner, by printing with black ink alone. Using black and white as a graphic language also strengthens the architect’s views on how the notion of colour was lost within the mines.

To accompany the photographs, Savvy Studio composed a visual essay, entitled ‘Cortes’ (Cuts), reinterpreting Ituarte’s work, based on the project’s main concept.

The book was presented at the opening of the exhibition in Casa Luis Barragán which was curated alongside Mauricio Rocha.
