Monsanto
Identity

After being asked to create or redesign the identity of a land or city in Portugal, I chose the village Monsanto, as I had already visited it before and was already familiar with the environment and culture. It's also important to mention that this beautiful place didn't have (and still doesn't) any visual identity.
For this design, I decided to bring together three concepts that represent the village of Monsanto so incredibly well. Tradition, fortress and granite are important elements of this location and, therefore, I used them as a basis to develop the entity.
Taking into consideration the history and the main visual elements that make Monsanto such a unique village, I chose to create an identity without any iconography, using only typography.
Taking into account the region's long history, I chose a classic and timeless font, Old Claude LP Std, in order to translate the connection of the people of Monsanto to their heritage and customs. This font was then adapted, through the use of ExtraBold and the spacing between letters, in order to show the weight and the juxtaposition of stones seen around the village, as well as the resistance of granite and the people of Monsanto.
The cutouts seen in the letters, along with added textures, mimic the texture and look of the granite that is so present in Monsanto.
Just like these textures, the colors were also chosen taking into consideration this impressive stone and, with the combination of all these elements, I created the identity of Monsanto.
