Yin & Yang, Fuxi & Nüwa
Ink, gold ink and silver leaves on paper, 2019
Inspired by the myth of Fuxi and Nüwa,
Fuxi is a culture hero in oriental legend,
credited along with his sister
and wife Nüwa with creating humanity.
In most of the ancient paintings,
Nüwa stands for heaven with a round compass
and Fuxi symbolises earth with a square ruler.
Also, Fuxi represents the yang of the sun,
and Nüwa represents the yin of the moon.
Therefore, golden ink is used to depict the sun,
and silver foil is applied to create
the texture of the moon’s surface.
As for the entangled tails of the couple,
it symbolised the double helix of DNA.
